Music Review: Stacy Barthe

Ms. Stacy Barthe has a beautiful heart that does not just seep into her voice, but owns it. Her voice is clear, pure, steady and strong. No embellishments or distractions, just a direct line into Ms. Barthe’s soul. She is the epitome of R & B and you may not realize it, but you have been hearing her work for years. Since 2007, she has been working with multiple producers to create a list of successes. The list is long, beginning with Britney Spears, Akon, Melanie Fiona, Estelle, Brandy, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Katy Perry’s “Hummingbird Heartbeat”, Rihanna’s “Cheers (Drink to That)”, and Kelly Rowland’s “Everywhere You Go”. In 2011, she finally debuted her first, personal EP, featuring a slow and steady style and deep rhythms transferring well to the guttural emotion emanating from her voice.

Sincerely Yours, Stacy Barthe EP (2011) is the first of the only two EPs she has out. The favorite of the two, featuring the one and only Frank Ocean, this EP’s themes center on true R & B themes, the heights and depths of being love sick. Soft production is perfect to showcase her solid, but sometimes delicately airy sound. Complementing harmonization and a range from gentle speech to powerful belting give the effect of story telling, carrying you through Barthe’s feelings, empathetically, but not sympathetically. Tracks to check: “Touch”, “Without You”, “Drink My Pain Away”, “Let It Be”.

Post love sick, Barthe explores the degrees of post breakup recovery in her next EP In the InBetween (2012). The same slow and steady style is preserved, but this time the production is more developed and interesting, balancing a falter in Barthe’s earlier emotional story-telling. There are less highs and lows as she re-learns independence, but her tone somehow becomes more concentrated with an emphasis on ballads. Tracks to check: “Find Your Way”, “Do Me”, “Keep It Like It Is”.
